Nymindegab Strand

Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Nymindegab Strand is located on the North Sea coast approximately 1.3 kilometres west of the town of Nymindegab in Varde Municipality, Denmark. The beach is the northernmost of ten bathing stations along the west coast. The beach and seabed consist primarily of sand, with gravel and stones occurring occasionally. The beach is approximately 100–120 metres wide depending on tidal conditions.

Water

North Sea (Vesterhavet). Water depth and current conditions are highly variable due to tidal movements, currents, deposits, and weather conditions. Water salinity is approximately 3%. The seabed consists primarily of sand with occasional gravel and stones.

Location

Located near Nymindegab, approximately 1.3 kilometres west of the town, on the border with Ringkøbing-Skjern Municipality. Parking is available approximately 200 metres from the beach.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent (Udmærket). Classification based on four years of monitoring results (2020–2023, all rated Excellent). Monitoring tests analyse for Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci bacteria as indicators of faecal contamination.

Risks

Strong currents and sandbars (revels) running parallel to the coast can create dangerous rip currents flowing from the beach towards waves. Water depth increases rapidly. Current direction is predominantly northward in open water but southward near the shore. Phytoplankton and foam-forming algae can be washed ashore by wind and weather, potentially containing irritant bacteria. Sea bacteria including Vibrio and Shewanella may occur at higher water temperatures exceeding 20 degrees Celsius for extended periods, though they typically do not occur in large numbers at the North Sea.
