Hesnæs Havn South is a sandy beach approximately 1000 metres long and 20–30 metres wide located on the eastern coast of Falster at Hesnæs Vig. The beach has a sand and stone bottom with water depth under 2 metres for approximately 160 metres from the shore. The bathing water is classified as excellent according to EU standards based on data from 2011–2014. The beach is bordered by meadowland on one side and forest on the other, with the public watercourse Hesnæs Bækken discharging onto the beach.

Water

Brackish water body. Beach approximately 1000 metres long and 20–30 metres wide with sand and stone bottom. Water depth under 2 metres for approximately 160 metres from the shore. Water temperature in bathing season ranges from 12–21 °C. Water currents predominantly flow northward (28% of measurements) and southward (16% of measurements).

Location

The beach is located at Hesnæs on the eastern coast of Falster, Denmark. Access is via Bønnetvej or Hesnæsvej roads, or by public transport using bus line 737 to Hesnæs. Parking is available along Bønnetvej beside the beach.

Facilities

Toilet facilities. Lifeguard post (redningstrekant).

Season

Monitoring conducted from 1 May to 1 September, with minimum 6 samples collected during this period.

Water Quality

Water classified as excellent quality according to Announcement no. 939 of 18 September 2012, based on data from 2011–2014. Occasional short-term faecal contamination occurs, primarily from Hesnæs Bækken watercourse which receives treated wastewater from Moseby treatment plant, scattered settlements, and the town of Bønnet. Risk of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) blooms exists, particularly during sustained warm, sunny weather and easterly winds. Macroalgae accumulation risk is generally low. Glass shards, waste, oil spills, and other chemical contamination may occasionally occur.

Risks

Occasional short-term faecal contamination from watercourse discharge and scattered settlement sewage systems. Risk of blue-green algae blooms during warm, sunny weather with easterly winds; blooms can cause headache, skin irritation, fever, nausea, and diarrhoea. Macroalgae accumulation can occur at beach edge, promoting bacterial growth and extending survival of faecal bacteria. Glass shards, waste, oil spills, and chemical contamination may occasionally be present. Sudden contamination from boat accidents, manure tank leaks, and sewer lines is possible.
