Ore Strand

Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Ore Strand is a bathing beach located on Grønsund at Nordfalster, approximately 1 kilometre east of Stubbekøbing. The beach is approximately 400 metres long with a narrow strip of sand and stones along the water's edge and green areas along the shore. The area is shallow, with water depth under 2 metres for approximately the first 120 metres from the coast. Water temperatures during the bathing season range from 12 to 22 degrees Celsius.

Water

Brackish water body classified as Grønsund. Water flow is from varying directions but predominantly eastward (35 percent) and westward (22 percent). Shallow water with depth under 2 metres for approximately the first 120 metres from the coast.

Location

Nordfalster, approximately 1 kilometre east of Stubbekøbing. Access is via Kongsnæsvej to Ore. Parking is available at the end of Granhegnet. No public transport serves the beach.

Facilities

Swimming platform.

Season

1 May to 1 September. At least 6 samples are collected during this period to monitor water quality.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent according to Decree no. 939 of 18 September 2012. Classification is based on data from 2011 to 2014. No exceedances of water quality requirements for faecal pollution occurred during the monitoring period.

Risks

Risk of cyanobacterial blooms, particularly during prolonged warm, sunny weather with easterly winds. Blooms can cause discoloration of water and produce toxins causing headache, skin irritation, fever, nausea, and diarrhoea. Risk of macroalgae accumulation at the shoreline. Glass fragments, litter, oil spills, and other chemical pollution can occasionally occur. Sudden pollution events may occur from incidents involving pleasure boats, slurry tanks, and sewer lines.
