Ingolstadt offers two main designated EU bathing waters: Auwaldsee and Baggersee. These natural waters provide bathing opportunities within the city area. Natural bathing waters are not swimming pools and are not disinfected, elaborately treated, or analysed daily. Water access is left in a natural state or developed with minimal structural measures.

Water

Season

Official monitoring period: April to September. Monthly sampling by health authority during bathing season.

Water Quality

Bathing waters designated under EU Bathing Water Directive 2006/7/EC and Bavarian Bathing Water Regulation (BayBadeGewV). Monitoring includes Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci as faecal contamination indicators. Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) are monitored as required. Temperature and transparency are measured. Water is assessed for abnormal turbidity, discolouration, detergent residues, mineral oils, and dangerous objects.

Risks

Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) can produce allergen-causing and acutely toxic substances at high concentrations. Faecal contamination from waterfowl can degrade water quality. Health authority implements appropriate measures including public notification if health hazard is suspected or confirmed.
