Karaffa is a small pebble beach located on the eastern side of the Kato Pyrgo fishing harbor in the Nicosia district of Cyprus. The beach measures 470 meters in length with an average water depth of 0.8 meters and a maximum depth of 2 meters. The shoreline is semi-natural with stabilizing breakwaters made of natural boulders to retain beach material. The beach is publicly managed but remained closed during the last swimming season due to harbor construction works and is expected to reopen after completion. Public visitation occurs primarily during July and August.

Water

Coastal marine water body within the Eastern Tillyria water body (CY_1-C1). The beach is 470 meters long with an average water depth of 0.8 meters and a maximum depth of 2 meters. The seabed is covered with pebbles. The water body belongs to a larger river basin (Cyprus, CY001) with mean basin elevation of 416.3 meters and mean annual precipitation of 542.1 millimeters.

Location

The beach is located on the eastern side of the Kato Pyrgo fishing harbor, accessible via a small bypass road from the coastal road of Pyrgo. It is situated in the Kato Pyrgo community within the Nicosia district. The monitoring point coordinates are 32.6742°E, 35.1879°N.

Facilities

No public facilities are available. There are no waste collection bins on the beach. Waste collection is managed by the Kato Pyrgo community. Some food service infrastructure exists in the eastern section of the beach.

Season

July and August.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent based on long-term monitoring data. The coastal water body is in good ecological condition. Isolated pollution incidents occurred in 2005 and 2007 due to rainfall events preceding sampling. No short-term pollution incidents were recorded during the 2008-2010 swimming seasons. Maximum daily number of swimmers is 300.

Risks

Low risk of macroalgae and phytoplankton eutrophication development. Small risk of short-term pollution from stormwater runoff and passing vessels, expected to occur once per swimming season with a duration of 1-2 days. A small stream discharges approximately 40 meters west of the beach.
