Konnos is a small beach located in a large bay in Cyprus, notable for its exceptional natural beauty. The beach comprises two small sandy areas separated by a small rocky headland. The seabed is rocky, composed of marl chalks with sandstone deposits visible as rocks both underwater and on the beach. The beach attracts a large number of visitors and is situated within the Natura 2000 network area Cabo Greco, which is also a National Forest Park.

Water

Coastal water body named Protaras with code CY_25-C3. The beach is 300 metres long. Average water depth is 0.8 metres, with a maximum depth of 1.5 metres. The beach is situated within the Cyprus river basin area, which receives a mean annual surface rainfall of 350 millimetres.

Location

Located in the Ammochostos District, within the municipality of Paralimni or the municipality of Agia Napa, Cyprus. The beach is set approximately 45 metres below the plateau above the cliff, with steep slopes. Large hotel development is located north of the beach on the plateau. Parking is available approximately 100 metres from the beach.

Facilities

Changing cabins, informational signs, disabled access ramp, lifeguard platform, lifeguard services with rescue equipment available from 10:00 to 18:00, toilets, showers (located at a kiosk near the parking area, approximately 100 metres from the beach), umbrellas, sunbeds, waste collection bins. The beach has Blue Flag status.

Water Quality

The bathing water is classified as excellent based on monitoring data. The coastal water body is in good ecological status. Monitoring data from 2004-2007 from a station 130 metres south of the bathing area showed nitrate concentrations and chlorophyll-a concentrations below 2 mg/l and 2 μg/l respectively, with decreasing trends in nitrate concentrations. No eutrophication was recorded during this monitoring period. The area is fully covered by a sewerage network.

Risks

A small stream flows into the beach and has caused flooding phenomena in the past. Possible pollution sources include agricultural runoff and infiltration, marine sports and pleasure boats mooring in the bay, and malfunction of sewerage systems in coastal developments. Low risk of macroalgae and phytoplankton eutrophication development. Between 2008 and 2010, only one short-term pollution incident was recorded (29 July 2008). Short-term pollution risk is low.
