Kotsias is a sandy beach in northern Paphos, Cyprus, with a length of 200 meters and widths varying from a few metres to 40 meters. The beach is characterized by fine sand resulting from sandstone erosion, with pebbles on the upper reaches and exposed bedrock on the northern, southern, and upstream sections. The seabed is sandy. The beach has been monitored for bathing water quality for many years and is classified as excellent.

Water

Open seacoast in northern Paphos within the Water Body CY_6-C1. Average water depth is 2.5 meters with a maximum depth of 5 meters. The coastline is naturally open without bays. Strong currents are present due to the absence of sheltered bays, with warning signs posted at the beach entrance.

Location

Located in the Paphos District, administered by the Chlorakas Community. Coordinates: 32.3933°E, 34.8125°N (ETRS89). The monitoring point is situated where the main volume of swimmers gathers under normal conditions and where a seasonal stream discharges.

Facilities

During the summer season, a lifeguard and lifeguard equipment are provided. Sunbeds and umbrellas are available from hotels during summer. Waste collection bins are positioned along the entire beach length, with cleaning responsibility held by the Chlorakas Community Council. No public facilities for public services are available. No marine sports activities take place.

Season

Summer season monitoring period. Maximum daily number of swimmers is 300 persons.

Water Quality

Bathing water quality is classified as excellent based on monitoring data since Cyprus's EU accession in 2004. The related internal surface water body (CY_1-5-7_R3) is in good ecological status. Possible pollution sources include agricultural runoff and seepage from coastal development septic tanks, though the wider area lacks sewerage infrastructure. Possible nutrient pollution from underground water sourcing the Kotsias stream, which receives irrigation water from upstream agricultural areas. The area is designated as vulnerable to nitrate pollution.

Risks

Strong currents for which warning signs are posted at the beach entrance. Possible risk of macroalgae and phytoplankton development assessed as moderate based on pollution sources. The Kotsias stream has caused significant flooding in the past, resulting in two drowning deaths in 2006.
