Plaka is a bathing area consisting of three small coves located in North Pafos, Cyprus. One cove is sandy while the other two are rocky with steep slopes. The sandy beach was formed by sand deposits behind a group of rocks in the sea. The shoreline is natural with a bottom composed mainly of sand, pebbles, and rocks, some of which appear above the water surface. The area features shrubby vegetation including palm trees, and the coastal zone contains tourist developments with recreational and dining facilities.

Coastal water body in North Pafos. Beach length: 200 m. Average water depth: 2.5 m. Maximum water depth: 5 m. The substrate is primarily hard sandstone. The seabed is mainly sandy with pebbles and rocks.

Location

Located in the Kissonerga community, Pafos district, Cyprus. Coordinates: 32.3918°E, 34.8200°N (ETRS89). The monitoring point is situated at the location with the highest density of bathers.

Facilities

No public facilities available for the general public. Toilets available at the hotel and dining establishment. Summer services offered include sunbeds and umbrellas. Beach cleaning is the responsibility of the Kissonerga Community Council.

Season

Monitoring programme since 2008. Southeastern winds prevail during the swimming season.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as exceptional based on monitoring data since 2008. The coastal water body is in good ecological status. Low risk of eutrophication from macroalgae and phytoplankton development.

Risks

Low likelihood of short-term pollution. No recorded incidents of short-term pollution during the 2008-2010 swimming periods. Potential source: malfunction of sewerage systems at coastal developments, estimated frequency once during the swimming season with duration of 1-2 days. No marine space pollution sources identified.
