The bathing beach is 27 metres long with an average river width of 24 metres. The water depth ranges from 20 centimetres minimum to 4 metres maximum, with a riverbed of pebbles and rocks. The zone has experienced recurring contamination problems resulting in closure for many years, with compliance recorded only four times over the past 20 years.

Location

Pont-à-Lesse, within the Lesse hydrographic sub-basin of the international Meuse hydrographic district. The zone is located within water body LE29R (Lesse VI).

Water Quality

The bathing water zone has experienced recurring contamination problems classified as non-compliant for most years. Over the past 20 years, the zone was declared compliant only in 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2005. Principal contamination sources are human fecal bacteria, followed by cattle and environmental sources. Faecal bacterial concentrations frequently exceed 1,000 CFU/100 ml, particularly during rainfall events.

Risks

Recurring faecal bacterial contamination from human sources at the camping facility and hotel (0-0.8 km upstream), livestock access to watercourse 3.1 km upstream, and diffuse contamination from agricultural runoff across the watershed during rainfall. Bacterial concentrations significantly increase during rainfall events.
