Lake Bambois (Lac de Bambois) is an officially designated bathing zone located in the Fosses stream (Ruisseau de Fosses I), part of the Meuse International Hydrographic District. The lake covers 22.17 hectares with a 60-metre beach, a homogeneous muddy bottom, natural banks with grass coverage near the bathing area and trees elsewhere. The water depth ranges from 20 centimetres to 230 centimetres. The zone was officially designated as a bathing area on 18 July 2002.

Water

Lake (artificial water body) in the Fosses stream (Ruisseau de Fosses I), a steep-slope Condrusian stream. Surface area 22.17 hectares. Water depth ranges from 20 centimetres minimum to 230 centimetres maximum. Bottom is homogeneous and covered with mud. Natural banks with grass coverage near the bathing zone and trees elsewhere.

Location

Rue du Grand Etang, 5070 Bambois, Belgium. Altitude 245 metres. Lambert coordinates: X 172465, Y 118011. Located in the Sambre sub-basin, approximately tens of kilometres upstream from the confluence with the Sambre River near Sambreville.

Facilities

An information panel placed in 2008 indicates authorization for bathing.

Water Quality

Water quality managed by the Direction Générale opérationnelle Agriculture, Ressources naturelles et Environnement (DGARNE). Bacteriological parameters monitored. Historical compliance data and 2010 bathing season data collected. Potential for cyanobacteria and macro-algae proliferation assessed.

Risks

Potential for cyanobacteria and macro-algae proliferation. Upstream pollution sources include collective sewerage systems with wastewater treatment plant discharges and storm overflows, autonomous sanitation systems, agricultural activity, and tourism.
