Falemprise Lake is a designated bathing water zone in the Sambre sub-basin of the Meuse International River District. The bathing area has a beach length of 50 metres and covers 20.38 ares, with water depth ranging from 0.2 to 1.50 metres. The lake generally presents no apparent water quality problems, though occasional cyanobacteria blooms occur during summer season. The lake bottom is characterised by fine sediment coverage.

Reservoir lake with surface area of 38.58 hectares. Beach length 50 metres. Bathing zone area 20.38 ares. Water depth minimum 0.2 metres, maximum 1.50 metres. Fine sediment bottom.

Location

Located at Cerfontaine at an altitude of 215 metres in the Sambre hydrographic sub-basin. The zone is part of the SA01L water body (Falemprise Reservoir).

Water Quality

Bacteriological sampling campaigns conducted in summer 2015 during both dry and wet weather conditions showed no major problems in the immediate vicinity of the bathing zone. Cyanobacteria blooms occur regularly from spring to late summer, with potential microcystin production. Several fecal contamination sources were identified upstream: treatment plant outlets at Soumoy and Senzeilles, livestock access points to watercourses, and overflow dischargers in Villers-deux-Eglises and Cerfontaine.

Cyanobacteria proliferation in summer season represents a potential risk to swimmers. Identified upstream contamination sources include untreated wastewater discharges and livestock access to watercourses, though their overall impact on final water quality is limited.
