Plage Océane is a sandy beach located in the commune of Labenne in the Landes département of southwestern France. The regulated swimming zone is 550 meters long and 40 meters wide, with a total area of 22,000 square meters. The beach has a gentle slope of 2% and is backed by a dune landscape with pine forest. The beach is used for swimming, recreational fishing, and surfing, with average daily attendance of 3,800 visitors.

Water

Ocean beach with sandy substrate. Water transparency (Secchi depth) exceeds 1 meter. Water circulation is influenced by a dominant north-south current and wave-driven currents. The sandy seabed causes suspended sediment affecting water transparency during swell and tidal movements.

Location

Labenne, in the southern part of Landes département, near Bayonne, Anglet, and Biarritz. The beach is accessible by road with parking and two pedestrian access paths (north and south). The rescue post is located at the top of the dune.

Facilities

Rescue post located at top of dune with sanitary facilities. Showers and toilets available. Two bars and a surf school located behind the dune. Daily garbage collection via bins. Information display at rescue post level. Animals prohibited.

Season

Mid-June to mid-September.

Water Quality

Classification A (good quality water) from 2006 to 2010. Simulation based on 2006 Directive indicates Excellent quality. Enterococcus (EC) values ranged from 30 to 92 CFU/100ml, with a guideline value of 100 and imperative value of 2000. Escherichia coli (EI) values ranged from 30 to 46 CFU/100ml. Results never exceeded guideline values in monitoring and self-control tests. No contamination episodes were revealed during self-control campaigns.

Risks

Several episodes of physalis (Portuguese man o' war) invasion occurred in August with swimming prohibition. Water transparency is influenced by swell and tidal movements on the sandy substrate.
