Plage Océane is a sandy beach in Ondres, a commune in the Landes department of Aquitaine, France. The regulated bathing zone extends 400 metres along the beach with an average width of 100 metres. Water transparency is good, with Secchi depth greater than 1 metre. The beach is characterized by a natural sandy shoreline backed by a dune system with maritime pine forest. It is designated as a nature reception beach with maximum visitor capacity, requiring high service levels while preserving its natural character.

Water

Atlantic Ocean beach. Regulated bathing zone is 400 metres long and approximately 100 metres wide. The beach substrate is sandy. Water circulation is dominated by a north-south current and wave action. Transparency is influenced by suspension of sandy substrate from wave and tidal movement.

Location

Ondres is located 8 kilometres north-east of Bayonne in the Landes department. The beach is accessed via a road with parking available. Wooden stairs provide pedestrian access to the bathing zone.

Facilities

One lifeguard post on the dune. Toilets and showers on the dune. No other beach amenities or equipment. Animals are prohibited. Information signage along the pedestrian access. Parking with vehicle access to the dune. Restaurants available in the area.

Mid-June to mid-September

Water Quality

Water quality classification A (good quality) consistently from 2006 to 2010. Under the 2006 EU Directive, the water is classified as excellent quality. Escherichia coli guideline value exceeded 4 times since 2005. No self-monitoring threshold exceedances since 2008. No contamination episodes detected in 2010. Jellyfish invasions were recorded from 19 July to 20 August 2010, with red flags raised on 26, 27 July and subsequent dates.

Risks

Jellyfish invasions occurred during summer 2010 (19 July to 20 August), with multiple episodes recorded. Wave and tidal movements cause suspension of sandy substrate affecting water transparency.
