Varna Lake is located in a depression formed by the damming of an abandoned section of the Isarco River. The lake has a marshy character and is largely surrounded by mixed woodland. The rocky bottom is composed of quartziferous phyllites and granite, partially covered by moraine deposits. A vast silting area covered with reeds, almost twice the size of the lake, extends to the south. The bathing area is situated in the northern part of the lake in front of a meadow.
