Italy Lake 1 - Excellent

Lake Fiè is situated at the foot of Monte Sciliar in a depression formed by glacial erosion, preserved to the present day by an artificial dam. The bathing area features wooden pontiles, meadow, and reed beds. To the south, the lake becomes progressively shallower and borders a silting zone covered with reeds.

Alpine lake formed by glacial erosion and maintained by an artificial dam. Located in the Adige River watershed.

Location

Fiè allo Sciliar municipality in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, northern Italy. Altitude 1056 meters above sea level. The bathing area extends 0.35 km along the coast.

Facilities

Wooden pontiles and equipped bathing zone with parking. Dogs are prohibited from bathing by municipal ordinance.

Water Quality

Excellent water quality classification based on 2021–2024 monitoring data (2024 evaluation). Active limnological monitoring programme with three samplings per year. Hotel facilities and services from the equipped bathing zone and parking are connected to sewage network, resulting in no direct discharges to the lake.

Risks

Primary production may become elevated during periods of limited water exchange. Short-duration pollution events are unlikely with no identified sources. No previous cyanobacterial bloom events. No previous phytoplankton proliferation events.
