Lavadores is an urban beach with a small sandy and rocky strip bordered by a concrete wall. It encompasses the Pedras Amarelas and Lavadores concessions. The beach is located in Vila Nova de Gaia in the Douro River basin.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified according to Decreto-Lei 135/2009 and Decreto-Lei 113/2012. Monitoring occurs every 3 weeks. No days of bathing prohibition or advisement due to short-term pollution were recorded during the 2024 bathing season.

Risks

Short-term pollution is unlikely but may occur due to excessive flow of tributary streams during rainfall, which can cause entrainment of microbiological load. Untreated effluent discharge may occur if the sewage treatment plant malfunctions. Potential faecal contamination sources include the local sewerage network, the Ralo tributary stream, and the Douro River. Cyanobacteria proliferation risk is moderate with a history of blooms. Macroalgae and phytoplankton proliferation risks are low with no history of occurrence.
