Canide Sul is an urban beach with sandy morphology located in Vila Nova de Gaia. The beach has reduced dimensions and is delimited by a breakwater at its northern edge. It is situated in the Douro River basin and is monitored for bathing water quality.

14 June to 14 September 2025.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified according to Decreto-Lei 135/2009 (amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012). Monitoring occurs every 3 weeks. In 2024, no days of bathing were advised against or prohibited due to short-term pollution events.

Risks

Short-term pollution is unlikely but may occur due to excessive flow from the tributary during rainfall events, leading to microbiological contamination. Untreated effluent discharge may also occur if the wastewater pumping station malfunctions. Potential pollution sources include faecal contamination from the local sewerage network and the ribeira de Canide tributary. Cyanobacteria have a moderate proliferation potential with a history of bloom occurrence. Macroalgae and phytoplankton have low proliferation potential with no history of occurrence.
