Salgueiros is an urban beach located in Vila Nova de Gaia with an extensive sandy shoreline. It encompasses the concessions of Estrela do Mar and Salgueiros. The beach has considerable sand morphology and is situated on the Douro River.

Water Quality

Water quality classification follows Decreto-Lei 135/2009 (amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012). Sampling frequency is every 3 weeks. In 2024, bathing was advised against or prohibited for 1 day due to short-term pollution events.

Risks

Short-term pollution is unlikely but may occur due to excessive surface flow from drainage networks and tributaries during rainfall, leading to microbiological load entrainment. It may also occur due to malfunctions in the wastewater lifting station. Potential faecal contamination from the local sanitation network and the Ralo tributary. Moderate potential for cyanobacteria proliferation with historical occurrence of blooms. Low potential for macroalgae and phytoplankton proliferation with no historical occurrence.
