Worriken is a bathing area located in the Amblève sub-basin of the Meuse River District at an altitude of 550 metres, making it the highest bathing zone in Belgium. The zone is situated on Lake Bütgenbach, covering 103 hectares with a beach length of 100 metres. The lake bottom is characterized by sand and mud, with water depths ranging from 0.1 to 3.5 metres. The bathing area was officially designated on 13 March 2014, replacing the former Bütgenbach zone located a few tens of metres to the west.

Lake Bütgenbach. Area: 103 hectares. Beach length: 100 metres. Minimum depth: 0.1 metre. Maximum depth: 3.5 metres. Bottom composition: sand and mud. The lake is classified as a deep Ardennes reservoir.

Location

Altitude 550 metres. The zone is situated within the Amblève sub-basin in the Meuse River District. A pumping station is located in proximity to the new bathing zone.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: excellent. Bacteriological sampling conducted on 9 September 2014 showed all E. coli concentrations below 10 CFU/100 ml, well below the excellent quality threshold of 500 CFU/100 ml. The former Bütgenbach zone was declared compliant since 1993. The newly designated zone presents no major contamination problems in dry weather conditions.

Risks

A pumping station located in proximity to the bathing zone could pose a risk to users in cases of heavy rainfall, storms, or exceptional water flows.
