Robertville Lake is a small deep reservoir located in the Ardennes region at an altitude of 500 metres, making it the second-highest bathing zone in Belgium. The designated bathing zone covers 150 metres of beach along a 56-hectare lake with a minimum depth of 0.10 metres and maximum depth of 3.50 metres. The lake bottom is characterised by mud and stones. Over the past 30 years, the bathing zone has been declared non-compliant only twice, indicating relatively good water quality with low sensitivity to contamination problems.

Location

The bathing zone is located in the Amblève sub-basin, part of the Meuse International River Basin District. It is situated at 500 metres altitude in the Ardennes region of Belgium.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: excellent overall, with only two non-compliance declarations in the past 30 years. Monitoring results from 2016 sampling campaigns identified E. coli as the limiting bacterial parameter. Identified pollution sources include a sewerage network junction at 0.8 km upstream with E. coli concentrations increasing from 550 CFU/100ml to 4,700 CFU/100ml over 200 metres; cattle access to waterways in the upstream headwaters; direct discharge of wastewater from a residence; and three discharge points near autonomous sanitation zones in Les Censes and Bosfagne villages.

Risks

During dry weather conditions: sewerage network deficiencies and cattle access to waterways at 2.2 km upstream. During rainy weather: substantially elevated E. coli concentrations exceeding 1000 CFU/100ml threshold more than 3 km upstream, combined with additional bacterial contamination at 800 metres upstream from the bathing zone. Surface runoff from agricultural land and roadways contributes to contamination during rainfall.
