Lac de la Plate-Taille (I03) is a bathing zone located in the Sambre sub-basin within the Meuse International River Basin District in Wallonia. The lake covers 348 hectares and has been officially designated as a bathing area since 14 March 2008. The bathing zone has maintained excellent water quality since 2011 and has never been declared non-compliant. The lake bottom is homogeneous, characterized by mud and stones.

Location

The bathing zone is situated at an altitude of 264 metres within the Sambre sub-basin. It is part of the water body SA04L (Lac de la Plate-Taille) in Wallonia, Belgium.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent since 2011. The bathing zone has never been declared non-compliant since its official designation in 2008. Monitoring conducted in summer 2015 (both dry and rainy conditions) measured E. coli and intestinal enterococci concentrations. Identified contamination sources include a pumping station 250 metres from the bathing zone with potential overflow, a holiday village on the western part 400 metres away with increased concentrations during rainy conditions, and general holiday villages with increased bacterial load from stormwater networks. Absence of cyanobacteria problems.

Risks

Fecal bacteria contribution during rainy conditions could limit water quality under certain particular climatic conditions. Holiday village capacity recently increased, necessitating preventive measures. Cyanobacteria proliferation risk is relatively low.
