Plage des Moulins is a bathing beach located in Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer, a commune in Calvados, Normandy, situated on the English Channel between Pointe du Hoc and Port-en-Bessin. The beach is part of the D-Day landing beaches (Omaha Beach). The bathing water profile was established to identify and study pollution sources affecting water quality and swimmer health.

English Channel (La Manche). The water body encompasses tidal coastal waters with bathymetry and seabed characteristics studied in the Trevières sector.

Location

Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer, Calvados, Normandy, France. Located on the English Channel coast between Pointe du Hoc to the east and Port-en-Bessin to the west. The commune covers 6.9 km² and is surrounded by Vierville-sur-Mer to the west and Colleville-sur-Mer to the east.

Season

Official monitoring established following the 2013 directive classification, with first 4-year classification cycle to be completed by end of 2013 season.

Water Quality

Water quality classification established according to the 2013 classification under the new bathing water directive. Microbiological monitoring conducted by health authorities (ARS). Shellfish production zones monitored through REMI network (Ifremer). Phytoplankton and phycotoxin surveillance conducted through REPHY network (Ifremer).

Risks

Potential pollution sources identified include collective sewage systems with pumping stations and treatment plants, non-collective sewage systems, rainwater runoff, agricultural activities, camping-car waste discharge, nautical activities, and equestrian centres. Two submarine outfalls (Emissaire Est and Emissaire Ouest) identified as sources of discharge.
