Plage du Monument is a bathing beach located in Vierville-sur-Mer, a commune in the Calvados department of Normandy, France. The beach is situated along the English Channel east of Pointe du Hoc and west of Port-en-Bessin, forming part of the D-Day landing beaches known as Omaha Beach. The beach area experiences significant tidal variations and exposure to Atlantic swells. A comprehensive bathing water profile was established in October 2014 to assess water quality and identify potential pollution sources affecting the site.

Location

Vierville-sur-Mer, Calvados, Normandy, France, on the English Channel coast east of Pointe du Hoc and west of Port-en-Bessin. The commune covers 6.9 km² and is bordered by Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer to the east and Engleville-la-Percée to the west.

Season

Official monitoring established by the end of bathing season 2013 in accordance with European bathing water directive requirements.

Water Quality

Water quality classification was established based on 2013 monitoring data. The profile includes microbiological monitoring through the REMI network (shellfish production zones) and phytoplankton surveillance through the REPHY network. Historical quality classifications and monitoring records are documented.

Risks

Potential pollution sources identified include collective sewerage systems with pumping stations and natural lagoon treatment, non-collective sanitation systems, stormwater drainage, agricultural activities, recreational camping vehicles, nautical activities, and equestrian centres. Short-term pollution risk exists dependent on meteorological conditions.
