Lido Schiranna is a free-access pebble beach located on the eastern shore of Lake Varese near the city centre. It features a wide lawn and public park adjacent to the beach. The beach is approximately 10–35 metres wide and is situated at 238 metres above sea level.

Lake Varese (Lago di Varese). Bathing area extends 0.2 km. Monitoring point located at a buoy in the centre of the lake.

Location

Located in Schiranna on the eastern shore of Lake Varese, a few kilometres from Varese city centre in Lombardy, Italy. Ample parking is available.

Facilities

Bar, restaurants, toilets, large parking areas, and public park. Animals are not permitted on the beach.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as good for the period 2018–2021. A bathing prohibition was in place until June 2022 due to algal pollution. Remediation measures have been implemented including hypolimnetic withdrawal, sewerage system surveys and structural interventions, and integrated monitoring. The lake wastewater treatment falls under agglomeration AG01207201 with a single treatment plant in Gavirate that complies with discharge limits.

Risks

Cyanobacteria proliferation is a seasonal phenomenon favoured by nutrient inflow, temperature increase, and weather conditions. At high concentrations, cyanobacteria can produce toxins with potential toxicological effects. Since 2019, no regulatory threshold exceedances have been recorded.
