Water Quality

Classification pending. Studies are ongoing regarding eutrophication and algal growth in Lake Varese. Algal blooms have been documented throughout the year, with particularly notable blooms in October/November 2011 of Planktothrix rubescens with microcystin concentrations exceeding 5 micrograms per litre. Macroalgae and/or phytoplankton proliferation was documented in July 2012.

Risks

Recurring algal blooms throughout the year. Fish kills during algal blooms and sometimes due to anoxia in deep water layers. Short-duration pollution events are still under study.
