Lille Kulgab is a bathing spot located near Melby Overdrev and Asserbo Plantage on the north coast of Denmark. The beach is a sandy beach with dune vegetation, extending up to 300 meters wide in some areas, with open access at both ends. The seabed consists almost entirely of sand with small patches of seaweed. The water has been classified as excellent quality based on monitoring data from 2018-2021, with a long history of excellent ratings since 2011.

Water

Coastal bathing water with a sandy seabed. The seabed has a gentle slope away from the shore. Dominant water current flows from west to east, typically aligned with prevailing wind direction.

Location

The beach is located adjacent to Asserbo Plantage near Melby Overdrev in Halsnæs Kommune, Denmark. Access is via N. R. Olsensvej, which terminates at a large parking area. An information board is located at the beach entrance.

Facilities

Lifeguards available during bathing season from 10:00 to 17:00. Large parking area available. Information board present. No bathing platform. No disabled access facilities.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent based on 16 samples collected from 2018-2021. The classification has been excellent consistently since 2011, with only one measurement of slightly reduced quality recorded during 2014-2017. Fecal contamination sources are limited to bathers themselves.

Risks

Blue-green algae blooms occur rarely on the north coast but can cause headaches, skin irritation, fever, nausea, and diarrhea upon contact. Risk of macroalgae (seaweed) presence; decaying seaweed can release toxins and harbor disease-causing bacteria. Cyanobacteria blooms and large seaweed quantities cannot be predicted with certainty. Risk of short-term pollution is assessed as very low and cannot be predicted in advance. Occasional litter, glass shards, dead seals, and oil spills may occur.
