Hyllingebjerg is a bathing area located at a summer house development on the northern coast of Denmark, accessed via a stairway at the end of Hyllingebjergvej. The beach features a fine sandy surface with scattered larger stones interspersed between sand and beach meadow, and is narrow with relatively steep slopes and occasional smaller stone breakwaters. The fjord at the beach is generally shallow. The water has been classified as excellent quality based on monitoring data from 2018-2021.

Water

Fjord water in Kattegat. Water depth at the beach is generally shallow. Water current runs predominantly from west to east, typically consistent with prevailing wind direction. Sand bottom. Dangerous currents can occasionally occur near the breakwaters.

Hyllingebjerg summer house area, Halsnæs Kommune, Denmark. Access via stairway at the end of Hyllingebjbergvej. Small parking area available. Information signage present at the stairway entrance.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent. Based on 16 samples collected between 2018-2021. Historical classification data shows excellent ratings from 2005-2008 and continuously from 2011 onwards. The treated wastewater from Melby Treatment Plant is discharged approximately 1 kilometre from the beach at a depth of approximately 12 metres into Kattegat. The marine discharge is designed not to cause problems for bathing water quality. During heavy rainfall, mechanical treatment overflows can occur to the discharge pipe, but analysis of recent years shows only a weak correlation between heavy rainfall and reduced water quality.

Risks

Algal blooms of cyanobacteria occur rarely on the north coast but swimmers are advised not to bathe if water clarity is poor and feet cannot be seen at knee depth. Toxic algae can cause headaches, skin irritation, fever, nausea and diarrhoea. Macroalgae (seaweed) present a risk; decaying seaweed can release toxins and shield disease-causing bacteria from UV rays. Dangerous currents can occasionally occur near breakwaters. Litter, broken glass, dead seals and oil spills can occasionally occur.
