Listertalsperre is a reservoir bathing area located in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The water body covers 162 hectares with an average depth of 13 meters and maximum depth of 35 meters. The bathing area has a 50-meter beach section and has been designated as an EU bathing water since 1989. Despite exposure to various anthropogenic influences from its catchment area, the large size of the reservoir and intact biological self-purification capacity maintain good water quality.

Water

Reservoir classified as substantially modified. Surface area 162 hectares. Average depth 13 meters, maximum depth 35 meters. Water level fluctuations approximately 3 meters. Catchment area size 10–100 km². Water temperature ranges from 0 to 22 °C (average 11 °C). Water transparency between 1.5 and over 4 meters (average 2.5 meters). pH 7.3 to 8.5 (average 7.7). Water exchange time exceeds 30 days. Substrate sandy with silt and rocky components. Water body is stratified with mesotrophic nutrient conditions.

Location

The bathing area is operated by the city of Meinerzhagen, 58540 Meinerzhagen. The bathing spot is located at the DLRG area of Listertalsperre. The responsible authority is the Märkischer Kreis district office in Altena. UTM coordinates are E: 416911, N: 5658758.

Water Quality

Bathing water classification: Excellent for years 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018. All identified pollution sources including municipal treatment plants, industrial treatment plants, septic systems, cooling water discharges, stormwater systems, agricultural runoff, and camping areas have been assessed as having no relevant impact on water quality. Occasional water turbidity and elevated microbial counts may occur temporarily after heavy rainfall or sediment disturbance from high visitor numbers.

Risks

Occasional observations of algal growth, particularly macrophytes that can impair swimming use. Low risk of cyanobacterial mass development. Cyanobacterial blooms were not observed in the preceding four years. Occasional bird presence has no relevant impact on water quality.
