Sottopassaggio is a sandy beach in Loano, Liguria, consisting of several artificial coves with the sampling point located opposite a breakwater that delimits the second cove. The beach is relatively extensive and situated in an urbanized context along the western area of Loano. The beach received an excellent water quality classification for the 2019-2022 period.

Water

Coastal water body in the Ceriale-Finale water body. The water body is classified as mountainous coastal region with low stability (CWA3). The beach is sandy with multiple artificial coves.

Location

Loano, Savona Province, Liguria region, western area of the town bordering Borghetto S.S. The Marconi promenade, historic centre, and state road SS1 are nearby. A public car park and equipped urban park are located inland. The beach extends 0.858 km.

Facilities

Private beach establishments with related services, accommodation structures, and catering activities are present. The Marconi promenade is accessible above the beach.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2019-2022: Excellent. The sampling station was relocated further offshore starting in 2023. No coastal treatment plants are present within the bathing water. A sewage pipe approximately 230 metres east of the sampling point discharges outside the bathing area.

Risks

A sewage pipe transiting within the bathing water discharges approximately 1.5 km from the shore. During heavy precipitation and upstream critical conditions, increased stream flow rates may transport sewage downstream from the Rio Casazza mouth, which is located on the western boundary of the bathing water. Ostreopsis ovata microalgal proliferation has been recorded in the area; the reference station at Pietra Ligure exceeded the limit of 30,000 cells/litre in August 2018, with values between 10,000–30,000 cells/litre recorded in July and August 2018, July 2021, and August 2022. Inhalation of aerosol from this species causes temporary and reversible respiratory tract problems and possible febrile states in sensitive subjects.
