Marina C. is a predominantly sandy beach located in front of the coastal village of Borghetto Santo Spirito in Liguria. The beach is situated in a heavily urbanized context at the mouth of the Varatello torrent. It features private bathing establishments with related services, food and beverage facilities, and accommodation structures. The area includes a seafront promenade (G. Matteotti), a railway line, and the SS1 highway. The beach has an area of 0.512 km and was classified as Good based on the four-year assessment period 2019–2022.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Good (based on 2019–2022 four-year assessment). The Ligurian Sea is characterized by oligotrophic conditions that prevent cyanobacterial blooms. However, Ostreopsis ovata microalgal proliferation has been documented in the region for approximately a decade. The reference station at Pietra Ligure recorded exceedances of the 30,000 cells/litre limit in August 2018, and values between 10,000–30,000 cells/litre in July–August 2018, July 2021, and August 2022.

Risks

Sewage discharge outlets located approximately 1.4 km and 1.5 km offshore outside the bathing water area. During heavy precipitation, increased torrent flow at the Varatello mouth (located at the western boundary) may transport sewage downstream. Ostreopsis ovata microalgal blooms have occurred in the region, potentially causing temporary respiratory symptoms and fever in sensitive individuals through aerosol inhalation.
