Pizzo is a small bathing beach in Costa Volpino on Lake Iseo, located at the mouth of the Oglio River. Despite proximity to a contaminated former landfill and an industrial canal discharge, the area is frequented by swimmers during summer months. The beach is situated in the Lombardy region of Italy. Water quality monitoring from 2019-2022 classified the site as good, with excellent ratings for Escherichia coli and good ratings for intestinal enterococci.

Costa Volpino, Bergamo Province, Lombardy, Italy. The beach is located at the mouth of the Oglio River. A contaminated former landfill (fenced and inaccessible) and the Pisogne Industrial Canal outlet are nearby. The tourist port 'Pizzo' is in the area.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Good (2019-2022). Escherichia coli: 95th percentile 282 CFU/100ml, 90th percentile 134 CFU/100ml (excellent). Intestinal enterococci: 95th percentile 222 CFU/100ml, 90th percentile 105 CFU/100ml (good). Some results in 2019-2020-2021 exceeded limits established in Decree 30.03.2010. On 15.04.2019, monitoring detected 1500 CFU/100ml Escherichia coli and 500 CFU/100ml intestinal enterococci. Cyanobacteria concentrations in annual surveillance remain below threshold values with no toxic effects detected on swimmers or aquatic environments.

Contaminated former landfill nearby (fenced and inaccessible). Pisogne Industrial Canal discharge outlet adjacent to the beach. Short-duration pollution events may occur due to tourist influx, meteorological conditions, accidental discharges, and malfunction of overflow systems or treatment facilities.
