Louma Ammochostou is a sandy beach with low rocky formations of limited extent, located within a small semi-natural bay. The beach is 340 meters long and features hotel complexes and tourism infrastructure inland. The nearshore zone is semi-natural with primarily sandy sediment substrate. The beach has been designated with the Blue Flag status. Water conditions are classified as excellent based on long-term monitoring data.

Water

Mediterranean Sea coastal body (water body code CY_25-C3, part of Protaras water body). Average water depth 1.5 meters, maximum depth 2.5 meters. The beach is formed within a small semi-natural gulf with two rubble mole breakwaters constructed parallel to the shoreline at the gulf's extremities.

Location

Located in Paralimni Municipality, Famagusta District, Cyprus. The monitoring point is positioned at coordinates 34.0385°E, 35.0360°N (ETRS89), at the point of maximum bather concentration. The beach is managed publicly by Paralimni Municipality.

Facilities

Public biological toilets, changing rooms, showers. Umbrellas and sunbeds available. Waste collection bins present. Lifeguard services with equipment provided from 10:00 to 18:00. Infrastructure for water sports activities available. Blue Flag designation. Beach cleaning managed by Paralimni Municipality.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent based on monitoring data since 2004. The coastal water body is in good ecological status. Monitoring from 2004-2007 showed nitrate concentrations below 2 mg/l and chlorophyll-a below 2 µg/l. No eutrophication was observed during this period. One short-term pollution incident was recorded on 4 August 2009.

Risks

Moderate risk of macroalgae and phytoplankton development. Small risk of short-term pollution from malfunction of wastewater systems in coastal developments. Possible pollution sources include water sports activities and small boats moored at the beach.
