Vrysoudia is a sandy beach located within a small natural cove on the island of Cyprus, protected by rocky natural arms. The beach measures 240 metres in length with an average water depth of 1.5 metres and a maximum depth of 3 metres. The area features hotel and recreational facilities inland from the shore, interspersed with undeveloped spaces and natural vegetation including shrubs, reeds, and palms.

Water

Coastal water body named Protaras. Sandy beach with maximum 200 daily swimmers. Average water depth 1.5 metres, maximum depth 3 metres. Seabed covered by sandy material with grain composition; rocky formations present along the cove arms in the northwestern and southeastern sections of the nearshore zone.

Location

Vrysoudia is located in the Famagusta district within the Paralimni Municipality. The monitoring point is situated at coordinates 34.0313°E, 35.0443°N (ETRS89 reference system), positioned at the point of maximum bather concentration.

Facilities

Toilets available at adjacent hotels and restaurants. Umbrellas and sunbeds offered. Rubbish collection bins present. No public service infrastructure. Beach cleaning responsibility held by Paralimni Municipality.

Season

Monitoring programme commenced in 2008.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as excellent based on monitoring data. Coastal water body is in good ecological status. Nitrate concentrations and chlorophyll-a levels measured below 2 mg/l and 2 μg/l respectively during 2004–2007 monitoring. No eutrophication detected. Low risk of macroalgae and phytoplankton development.

Risks

Possible pollution sources include agricultural runoff and infiltration, irrigation runoff from tourist development green spaces, and recreational boats. No short-term pollution events recorded during 2008–2010 swimming seasons. Risk of short-term pollution events is negligible. Possible source: malfunction of sewerage systems at coastal developments. Frequency: once during swimming season. Duration: 1–2 days.
