Louma Ormithias is a sandy to pebbly-sandy beach of relatively wide width, formed in a natural rocky cove on the northeastern coast of Larnaca Gulf in Cyprus. The beach measures 170 metres in length with an average water depth of 1.5 metres and maximum depth of 3 metres. Access is provided by an asphalt road connected to the A3 motorway. The nearshore zone is semi-natural due to rockfill protection along the western edge. No structures are present on the beach itself.

Water

Larnaca Gulf (Northeastern). Sandy to pebbly-sandy nearshore bottom with some pebbles. Beach length 170 metres, average water depth 1.5 metres, maximum water depth 3 metres. Coordinates: 33.7766°E, 34.9802°N (ETRS89). The monitoring point is located at the centre of the beach where the main swimmer concentration occurs under normal conditions.

Location

Located in Ormitheia Community, Larnaca District, Cyprus. Access via an asphalt road that branches from the Ormitheia junction of the A3 motorway, which runs along the western edge of the beach. Parking availability not specified.

Facilities

No public facilities are available for visitor services. A private catering facility is located outside the beach area. No waste collection bins are present on the beach; waste collection is the responsibility of Ormitheia Community. Lifeguards, toilets, showers, and disabled access not mentioned.

Season

Monitoring data available from 2004 onwards (since Cyprus's EU accession). Historical monitoring conducted for many years prior.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent based on long-term monitoring data. The coastal body of water is in good ecological status. No pollution incidents have been recorded during the 2008–2010 bathing seasons. Possible pollution sources include agricultural runoff and seepage from the wide catchment area, A3 motorway runoff, septic tanks from residential settlements and a nearby catering facility, a stream discharging at the eastern boundary, a 50 cm stormwater pipe at the western boundary, fuel storage facilities and a petrol station. The beach lies within a nitrate-vulnerable zone. Moderate risk of macroalgae and phytoplankton development is estimated.

Risks

Moderate probability of macroalgae and phytoplankton growth. Negligible risk of short-term pollution. Possible sources of short-term pollution include stormwater runoff, occurring approximately once per bathing season with a duration of 1–2 days. The fishing harbour at Ormitheia lies approximately 500 metres to the east, and the Dhekelia military terminal lies 3 kilometres to the east; prevailing southwest winds may transport pollutants from these sources toward the beach. Vessel traffic associated with the harbour and terminal may contribute pollution.
