Cyprus Coastal 1 - Excellent

Ellinас is a sandy beach of considerable width located in the Larnaca Bay area in northeastern Cyprus. The beach features a characteristic delta-shaped sand deposit behind two breakwaters positioned 120 meters from the shoreline. Two small coves with rocky substrates form to the west of the main beach. Access is straightforward via an asphalt road that runs nearly adjacent to the beach.

Water

Sandy beach situated in the northeastern Larnaca Bay with a length of 1,510 meters. Average water depth is 1 meter and maximum depth reaches 2 meters. The nearshore zone has a sandy substrate with scattered pebbles, with rocky substrate locally in the western section.

Location

Located in the Larnaca District within the Pyla Community. The beach is easily accessible by an asphalt road connected to the primary and secondary road network of the region.

Facilities

Toilets are available at the tourist information kiosk. Disabled access infrastructure is provided. Umbrellas and loungers are available during summer months. Two waste bins are located on the beach. Maximum daily bather capacity is 2,000.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent based on monitoring data since Cyprus's accession to the European Union in 2004. The coastal body to which this beach belongs is in good ecological status. Moderate risk exists for macroalgae and phytoplankton development based on identified pollution sources.

Risks

Possible short-term pollution sources include storm runoff and malfunctioning septic systems from inland developments. No incidents of short-term pollution were recorded during the 2008-2010 bathing seasons. Negligible risk of short-term pollution occurrence. Potential pollution sources include agricultural runoff and infiltration from farming areas, septic systems from residential and tourist developments upstream, passing vessels near Dekelia fishing harbor and LNG terminal approximately 3 kilometers to the east, and a storm drain outlet approximately 50 centimeters in diameter discharging near the tourist kiosk.
