Lyngager Sø

Denmark Lake 1 - Excellent

Lyngager Sø is a freshwater lake covering approximately 14 hectares, formed in a former gravel pit near Roskilde, Denmark. The beach is approximately 120 metres long with fine sand, backed by gravel and vegetated green areas. The lake has no inlets or outlets, and water depth rises gradually from the shore before becoming more uneven, with some areas reaching depths of up to 18 metres. The recreational area offers picnic tables, shelters, a bathing pier during swimming season, parking facilities, and a walking path encircling the lake.

Water

Freshwater lake of approximately 14 hectares. Water depth rises gradually for the first few metres from shore, then becomes more uneven due to former gravel pit origin. Maximum depth reaches 18 metres in some areas. No inlets or outlets; water circulation depends on wind direction. Temperature stratification (thermocline) can occur in deeper areas.

Location

Located near Roskilde, Denmark. Two parking areas are available near the beach. The entire perimeter of the lake has a stable walking path for access.

Season

Routine monitoring occurs during the swimming season. Classification is reviewed annually in May before the swimming season begins.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent. Classification based on 16 control samples from 2017, 10 samples in 2018, and 10 samples in 2019. Monitoring for indicator bacteria (E. coli and enterococci) indicates very low faecal contamination. The station was newly designated in 2017. Classification is reviewed annually before the swimming season begins.

Risks

Risk of sudden temperature drops in deeper areas potentially causing cramps; swimmers advised to exercise caution. Low risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms due to clean water and absence of nutrient inflows. Low risk of phytoplankton blooms. Possible occurrence of swimmer's itch (ikter) caused by microscopic parasites in freshwater. Glass fragments and litter may occasionally occur on the beach. No risk of large seaweed accumulation. Chemical contamination risk is unlikely.
