Herslev Strand

Herslev Strand is a fine sand beach located in a scenic area on Lejre Vig west of Herslev Boat Harbour. The beach is approximately 65 metres long and up to 20 metres wide, with sand without larger stones. A bathing platform extends into the water during the bathing season, and to the right of the platform there is a smaller sand beach. The water is classified as brackish water.

Brackish water in Lejre Vig. Water depth is less than 2 metres up to 90 metres from the shore. Current direction is variable and comes primarily from the west.

Location

Herslev, Lejre Kommune, Denmark. Access is via Herslev Strandvej, which leads to a parking area on the western side. From the parking area, a path leads to a green area with facilities including beach volleyball court, football pitch, and swings.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as Excellent. Classification is based on routine sampling during the bathing season (1 June – 15 September) for faecal indicator bacteria (E. coli and enterococci). The classification was calculated based on control samples taken during the bathing season in the period 2008–2011 and is revised annually before the start of the bathing season.

Risks

A small watercourse 500 metres east of the beach has high levels of faecal bacteria during heavy rainfall; swimming is discouraged near this outlet. Risk of seaweed (macroalgae) washup in the water's edge; the municipality removes seaweed regularly during the bathing season. Low risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms. Low risk of phytoplankton blooms. Glass shards, waste, and chemical contamination including oil spills can occasionally occur. Sudden pollution from incidents involving leisure boats, slurry tanks, or sewage pipes is possible.
