Kattinge Vig

Denmark Coastal 1 - Excellent

Kattinge Vig is a 200-meter-long beach of fine sand located in idyllic surroundings within Kattinge Vig inlet on Roskilde Fjord, behind Boserup Forest. The beach is 15 meters wide and bordered by beech-forested cliffs to the north and reed marshland to the south. The water is classified as brackish.

Water

Brackish water in Roskilde Fjord. Water depth increases gradually offshore, reaching less than 2 meters at 100 meters from the coast. The seabed consists of fine sand with scattered small stones. Primary current direction is from the southwest.

Location

Kattinge Vig, Boserup Skov, Roskilde Municipality, Denmark. Access is limited to two paths at the southwestern end of the beach via footpaths and gravel roads through Boserup Forest. Parking is available 900 meters from the beach.

Season

Official bathing season monitoring occurs from May to September, with classification reviewed annually before the season starts.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent. Classification is based on routine monitoring of E. coli and enterococcus bacteria conducted during the bathing season from 2016-2019. The beach meets quality standards and the classification is reviewed annually before the bathing season starts.

Risks

Risk of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) blooms is low. Risk of phytoplankton blooms is low. Risk of macroalgae (seaweed) wash-up exists at the water's edge. Glass shards and litter can occur. Risk of chemical pollution is very low. Illegal wastewater discharge from recreational vessels is possible but routine monitoring indicates this is not currently affecting water quality. Water quality may be temporarily compromised after heavy rainfall.
