Denmark Lake 1 - Excellent

Idrætssøen is a recreational freshwater lake approximately 6.9 hectares in area, formed in a former gravel pit near Roskilde, Denmark. The beach is approximately 115 metres long and consists of fine sand. The lake area is under development and will offer various water-related activities in coming years. The water is very clean with no inlets or outlets, and the lake bottom becomes more uneven further from shore due to its origin as a gravel extraction site.

Water

Freshwater lake of approximately 6.9 hectares. Water depth increases gradually for the first few metres from shore, then becomes more uneven. The lake bottom consists of fine sand with small to medium-sized stones. Water depth can increase suddenly in some areas. Thermoclines can form in deep sections, causing significant temperature variations. The lake has no inlets or outlets; water circulation depends on wind direction.

Idrætssøen is located near Roskilde, Denmark. Parking facilities are available near the beach, and a nearby commuter parking area is also provided.

Season

Monitoring occurs during the bathing season. Classification is revised annually in May.

Water Quality

Water quality classification has not yet been assigned as 2023 was the first monitoring season. Routine sampling is conducted during the bathing season to analyse faecal indicator bacteria (E. coli and enterococci). The classification will be calculated based on control samples from four consecutive bathing seasons and revised annually in May.

Risks

Sudden temperature changes in deep areas can cause cramps; children and inexperienced swimmers should only bathe near the shore. Risk of swimmer's itch (cercarial dermatitis) from microscopic larvae in freshwater. Low risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms. Low risk of phytoplankton blooms. Potential for glass shards and litter. No risk of significant seaweed (macroalgae) washup. No known sources of short-term faecal contamination. Risk of chemical pollution (such as oil spills) is unlikely.
