Foce torrente Fondachello is a coastal bathing area located in Torregrotta, Sicily. The beach features very fine sand with a flat slope and is formed by sandy-pebbly sediments. The beach width ranges from 15 to 25 metres. It experiences constant erosive action in the area between Corso Sicilia and Torrente Fondachello. The bathing area attracts between 1,000 and 2,500 swimmers.

Water

Coastal water body. The seabed consists of alluvial deposits overlaid with sandy-pebbly sediments. The beach is classified as 'Coste di Piana di conoide' (alluvial plain coast) and has low stability (E3).

Location

Torregrotta, Sicily, in Messina Province. The bathing area is located 350 metres west of the mouth of Torrente Fondachello stream. Coordinates: 38.217006°N, 15.350631°E. The area extends approximately 0.90 kilometres.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Sufficient. Bathing is prohibited from 100 metres east of the wastewater treatment plant discharge to 100 metres west of the pumping station discharge. Bathing is also prohibited from the mouth of Torrente Caracciolo (Fondachello) to 300 metres west of it. The wastewater treatment plant is operating under EU infraction. Possible pollution sources include overflow discharge from pumping station relief pipes and the treatment plant, and accidental discharge of untreated sewage from overflow during equipment repair.
