M 500 Ovest is a bathing water area located at the mouth of the Fondachello stream in Sicily. The beach features very fine sand with a flat slope and is bordered by breakwater structures. The seabed consists of alluvial deposits overlaid with sandy and gravelly sediments. The bathing area extends approximately 0.150 square kilometres and typically accommodates 1000 to 1500 swimmers.

Water

Coastal water body in an alluvial plain. The beach is composed of sandy and gravelly sediments. The seabed consists of alluvial deposits with overlying sandy and gravelly sediments. The bathing area extends 0.150 square kilometres.

Location

The bathing water is located in Torregrotta, in the province of Messina, Sicily. It is positioned along the coast between Capo Milazzo and Capo Rasocolmo. The beach width is 15 to 20 metres.

Facilities

A small recreational boating area is present. No restrictions on animal access. Lifeguards, toilets, showers, and disabled access are not mentioned.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Good. Swimming is prohibited within 100 metres east of the treatment plant discharge and 100 metres west of the pumping station discharge. Swimming is also prohibited from the mouth of the Caracciolo stream (Fondachello) to 300 metres west of its mouth. The treatment plant operates under a wastewater discharge pipe into the sea and is subject to European infringement proceedings. Possible overflow discharge from pumping station tanks and the treatment plant has been identified as a pollution source.

Risks

Constant erosion is present in the area between Corso Sicilia and the Fondachello stream. Possible overflow discharge of untreated wastewater from pumping station overflow pipes and the treatment plant. Electrical equipment failure can cause discharge of untreated effluent through overflow outlets. No cyanobacterial proliferation events have been reported. No harmful algal blooms have been recorded.
