The bathing water at via del Mare in Monforte San Giorgio is a coastal marine area extending approximately one kilometre along an east-west direction. The beach consists of loose sediment that is predominantly sandy-gravelly, with a width varying between 20 and 50 metres and a fairly constant slope of 10-15 percent. The seabed is predominantly pebbly with a gentle, regular gradient. The beach has experienced significant variations in the shoreline over time, though recent appraisals show no appreciable retreat.

Water

Unconfined marine water with a predominantly pebbly seabed that slopes gently and regularly. The area covers 1.150 square kilometres with a variable beach width of 20 to 50 metres and a consistent slope of approximately 10-15 percent.

Location

Monforte San Giorgio, Province of Messina, Sicily. The bathing area extends from Capo Milazzo to Capo Rasocolmo and is bounded at its western end by the mouth of the Torrente Niceto.

Facilities

Refreshment points and small bars are operated during the bathing season. Boat rental services are available. There are areas for storage and rental of small recreational vessels. Animals are permitted in the water.

Water Quality

The bathing water is classified as Good. Swimming is prohibited within 200 metres east and west of the mouth of the Saja at Contrada Vina, and within 100 metres east of the mouth of the Torrente Niceto. Wastewater treatment does not comply with the standards required by Directive 91/271/CE. Pollution sources include discharge of wastewater coinciding with stormwater from the Torrente Niceto and the Canale Pantano, and possible losses or spills of oily hydrocarbon substances from tanker ships transiting or moored in the Gulf of Milazzo.

Possible presence of oily hydrocarbon substances from tanker ships that may beach on the shore, particularly during westerly winds. Possible spills or losses of hydrocarbons from tanker vessels moored or transiting in the Gulf of Milazzo waters.
