Makronissos is a sandy beach in Agia Napa with hotel infrastructure and recreational facilities. The beach is bordered to the south and west by a small peninsula that separates it from the neighbouring Ziaka beach. Rocky formations of beachrock type are present along the peninsula section. The beach has been designated with Blue Flag status and supports a maximum of 2,200 daily swimmers.

Water

Coastal water body named Agia Napa (code: CY_24-C3). The beach is 510 metres long with an average water depth of 0.7 metres and maximum depth of 2 metres. The seabed consists of sandy grain composition, with small rocky formations in the southern section and limited Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows at greater depths.

Location

Agia Napa municipality, Famagusta district, Cyprus. The monitoring point is located at the centre of the beach where the main concentration of swimmers typically occurs (coordinates: 33.9555°E, 34.9828°N).

Facilities

Blue Flag designated beach. Toilets available at the municipal kiosk. Umbrellas and sun loungers provided. Waste collection bins present. Lifeguard services with rescue equipment available from 10:00 to 18:00. Water sports infrastructure available in the western section. Beach cleaning maintained by Agia Napa municipality.

Season

Monitoring data available for periods 2004–2007 and 2008–2010. Southwestern winds prevail during the swimming season.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent based on monitoring data since Cyprus's EU accession in 2004. The coastal body is in good ecological status. Monitoring data from 2004–2007 show nitrate and chlorophyll-a concentrations below 2 mg/l and 2 μg/l respectively, with no eutrophication detected. One isolated pollution incident was recorded in 2007 with no identifiable source.

Risks

Moderate risk of macroalgae and phytoplankton development based on recorded incidents of ephemeral macroalgae (Cladophora spp) in the wider area. Small risk of short-term pollution from passing and moored recreational vessels, large number of swimmers, and potential wastewater system malfunction in coastal developments. Short-term pollution events recorded once per swimming season with duration of 1–2 days.
