Lanta is a large sandy beach located in a natural bay in Agia Napa, Cyprus. The beach is 370 meters long with recreational and dining facilities, as well as tourist complexes in the coastal zone. Vegetation in the western section includes ornamental species, while the eastern section has scrubland. The beach has been designated with Blue Flag status and is managed publicly by the Municipality of Agia Napa. Water quality has been monitored for many years and is classified as excellent based on monitoring data since Cyprus's EU accession in 2004.

Water

Coastal waters of Agia Napa bay. Average water depth 0.7 meters, maximum depth 2 meters. The shoreline is sandy in the central part of the bay and rocky at the edges. The beach is 370 meters long.

Location

Agia Napa, Famagusta District, Cyprus. The monitoring point is located at the center of the beach where the main concentration of swimmers is typically found under normal conditions (coordinates: 33.9589°E, 34.9871°N).

Facilities

Blue Flag status. Municipal toilets. Umbrellas and sun loungers available. Waste collection bins. Lifeguard services with rescue equipment available from 10:00 to 18:00. Water sports infrastructure available in the western section of the beach.

Season

Monitoring period established with Cyprus's EU accession in 2004. Swimming season monitoring data recorded for 2005, 2008-2010.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent based on monitoring data since 2004. Coastal water monitoring from 2004-2007 at nearby stations showed nitrate concentrations and chlorophyll-a levels below 2 mg/l and 2 μg/l respectively. The body of water is in good ecological condition. No eutrophication was detected at any monitoring station during the 2004-2007 monitoring period.

Risks

Moderate risk of macroalgae and phytoplankton development based on pollution sources, recorded instances of Cladophora spp in neighboring marine areas, and beach morphology. Possible pollution sources include passing and moored recreational vessels and marine sports. One isolated pollution incident was recorded during the 2005 swimming season. Small risk of short-term pollution with potential sources including passing and moored vessels, large numbers of swimmers, and possible malfunction of sewage systems in coastal developments.
