Man beach is a sandy bathing area located in the commune of Saint Pol de Léon. The beach is open, allowing pollutants to persist less long in the swimming zone. The area features an undulating terrain with rocky outcrops alternating with sandy coves. Agricultural zones and artificial green spaces predominate in the immediate vicinity, slowing water arrival at the beach and promoting bacterial disappearance.

Sandy beach bathing area on an open coastline. The site experiences wave action from various wind directions, with northwestern and northeastern winds driving pollution toward the coast, while southwestern winds disperse pollution seaward.

Location

Saint Pol de Léon commune. The beach is open to the sea with proximity to the Troméal and Trologot streams.

Water Quality

Water classification under Directive 76/160/CEE (2005-2010): good to average quality. Under Directive 2006/7/CE (2010 classification): excellent quality. Microbiological data for E. coli and enterococci between 2005 and 2010 never exceeded thresholds set by AFSSET. No short-term pollution identified.

Risks

Identified pollution sources include the Troméal stream with multiple pump stations that discharge into it when malfunctioning; the Trologot stream (rain-triggered pollution); pump stations at Kersaliou, Trologot, Kerom, Trofeunteun, and Kerivarch; non-compliant individual sewage systems near streams; birds present on the bathing area; and nutrient input from extensive vegetable farming areas. Heavy rainfall events are rare during summer (70% of rainfall below 5 mm), limiting pollution from precipitation.
