Marielyst Strandvej is a fine, child-friendly sandy beach located on the eastern coast of Falster on the Baltic Sea, approximately 3 km from Væggerløse. The beach extends approximately 5,200 m in length and 15–45 m in width, with sandy bottom and water depth under 2 m for the first approximately 120 m from the shore. The bathing water is classified as excellent according to Danish regulations, based on data from 2011–2014. A dike runs along the beach with a belt of beach meadow between it and the shore, transitioning to dunes, with a large holiday home area behind.

Water

Brackish water on the Baltic Sea. Approximately 5,200 m long and 15–45 m wide with sandy bottom. Water depth under 2 m for approximately the first 120 m from shore. Water temperature during bathing season ranges from 13–23 °C. Water currents predominantly from northern (24% of measurements) and southern (33% of measurements) directions.

Location

Located on Falster's eastern coast approximately 3 km from Væggerløse. Access via Elkenøre Strandvej, Sildestrup Øvej, or Marielyst Strandvej. Public transport available via bus lines 741 and 742. Multiple parking areas are located along the beach. Nearest services in Marielyst, approximately 300 m away.

Season

Official monitoring conducted from 1 May to 1 September, with minimum 6 water samples taken during this period.

Water Quality

Bathing water classified as excellent according to Danish Bekendtgørelse nr. 939 of 18/09/2012, based on data from 2011–2014. Minor, short-term faecal contamination occasionally observed, with sources unknown as the area has no wastewater discharge outlets. Risk of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) blooms exists, particularly during prolonged warm, sunny weather with easterly winds. Accumulation of macroalgae (seaweed) possible at waterline. Occasional glass shards, debris, oil spills, and other chemical pollution may occur.

Risks

Minor, short-term faecal contamination from unknown sources. Risk of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) blooms, especially during prolonged warm, sunny weather with easterly winds, producing toxic substances causing headache, skin irritation, fever, nausea, and diarrhoea. Accumulation of macroalgae at waterline can harbor bacteria and promote faecal bacterial survival. Occasional glass shards, debris, oil spills, and chemical pollution. Potential acute pollution from accidents involving pleasure boats, slurry tanks, and sewer lines.
