Skelby Strand is a sandy beach with stones located along Lambo Fairway near Skelby in Guldborgsund Municipality, Denmark. The beach is approximately 300 metres long and less than 10 metres wide. The water is shallow, with depths under 2 metres for the first approximately 150 metres from the shore and predominantly sandy bottom. Water temperature during the bathing season ranges from 14 to 24 degrees Celsius.

Water

Brackish water body classified as Lambo Fairway. The beach area is approximately 300 metres long and less than 10 metres wide. Water depth is under 2 metres for the first approximately 150 metres from the coast, with predominantly sandy seabed. Water temperature ranges from 14 to 24 degrees Celsius during the bathing season.

Location

The beach is accessed via Skelby Møllevej, where a small car park is located at the end of the road. Public transport is available via bus line 740 to Skelby Church, approximately 1 kilometre from the beach.

Season

Monitoring occurs from 1 May to 1 September, with at least 6 samples taken during this period.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as excellent according to Decree No. 939 of 18 September 2012, based on monitoring data from 2011–2014. Samples taken at the control station show only occasional brief faecal contamination. No significant faecal pollution of the bathing water is identified.

Risks

Risk of cyanobacterial (blue-green algae) blooms exists, particularly during prolonged warm and sunny weather with winds from the east. Cyanobacteria produce toxic substances causing headaches, skin irritation, fever, nausea and diarrhoea. Macroalgae (seaweed) accumulation can occur at the shoreline. Glass shards, waste, oil spills and other chemical contamination can occasionally occur. Sudden contamination from boat accidents, slurry tanks and sewage pipes is possible.
