Bøtø is a fine, child-friendly sandy beach on the east coast of Falster facing the Baltic Sea. The beach stretches approximately 4000 metres long and 20–40 metres wide, with sand bottom and water depth under 2 metres for the first approximately 120 metres from the shore. The beach is backed by a dike with beach meadow, dunes, and large summer house areas, with plantation and agricultural land further inland. The water is classified as brackish.

Water

Brackish water body in the Baltic Sea. Beach approximately 4000 metres long and 20–40 metres wide with sandy bottom. Water depth under 2 metres for the first approximately 120 metres from shore. Water temperature during bathing season ranges from 13–22 °C. Water currents predominantly flow north (34% of measurements) and south (22% of measurements).

Location

Located on the east coast of Falster, accessed via Bøtøvej which runs along the beach. Public transport available via bus lines 741 and 742. Multiple parking areas are available along the beach. Disabled access is provided at Bøtø Strandvej.

Facilities

Toilet, kiosk, benches on the dike, disabled access at Bøtø Strandvej, free bathing beach 300 metres south of the beach.

Season

Official monitoring period: 1 May to 1 September, with minimum 6 samples collected during this season.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as excellent according to Regulation No. 939 of 18 September 2012, based on data from 2011–2014. Occasional brief faecal contaminations occur; sources are unknown as the stretch is free from sewage discharge. Swimming advisories are posted when contamination is detected. The area is monitored with a minimum of 6 samples during the bathing season from 1 May to 1 September.

Risks

Occasional brief faecal contaminations from unknown sources. Risk of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms, particularly during prolonged warm, sunny weather and easterly winds; can cause headaches, skin irritation, fever, nausea, and diarrhea. Risk of macroalgae (seaweed) accumulation at the water's edge, which can harbour bacteria and extend their survival time. Glass shards, litter, oil spills, and other chemical pollution can occasionally occur.
