Marina Julia is a sandy and pebbly beach located in the Panzano Bay area near Monfalcone in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. The beach is backed by urban developments and maritime structures along an alluvial plain. Water quality has been classified as excellent for the 2017–2019 bathing seasons. The area may experience short-term pollution events during adverse weather conditions, particularly heavy rainfall, strong southerly winds, and river flooding.

Monfalcone, Friuli Venezia Giulia region, Gorizia province, Italy. Coordinates: 45.776528°N, 13.535101°E. Beach extent approximately 1.739 km.

Water Quality

Classification: Excellent (2015–2018 reference years). Escherichia coli 90th percentile: 89 CFU/100 ml, 95th percentile: 131 CFU/100 ml. Intestinal enterococci 90th percentile: 31 CFU/100 ml, 95th percentile: 50 CFU/100 ml. Quality trend shows improvement from sufficient classification in 2015–2016 to excellent in 2017–2019.

Risks

Short-term pollution events may occur during adverse meteorological conditions: heavy rainfall, strong southerly winds, and Isonzo River flooding. Contamination sources include Valentinis Canal (Isonzo River derivation), Brancolo Canal, Isonzo River, and Staranzano treatment plant diffuser. Urban runoff, agricultural drainage from the Brancolo reclamation area, sewage overflow, and discharge pipes with diffusers from Monfalcone port and Staranzano plant contribute pollutant transport. Strong south winds and high tides impede water mixing and prolong pollutant persistence. No cyanobacteria proliferation events or toxic algal species concentrations have been recorded in the past four years.
