A non-urban beach with an extensive sand strip and rocky outcrops, delimited by a dune ridge. The beach is located in the Leça river basin and monitored for bathing water quality. Bathing may be advised against or prohibited in case of pollution events affecting water quality.

Location

Matosinhos municipality. Monitoring point coordinates: latitude 41.23056°, longitude -8.72194°.

Season

2025 bathing season: June 14 to September 14. Sampling frequency: every 3 weeks.

Water Quality

Water quality classification follows Decreto-Lei 135/2009 (amended by Decreto-Lei 113/2012). No days of bathing prohibition or advisory occurred due to short-term pollution in the 2024 bathing season. Potential microbiological pollution sources include faecal contamination from the local rainwater drainage network and from nearby tributaries (ribeira da Agudela and ribeiro de Pampelido). Short-term pollution is unlikely but may occur due to excessive tributary flow during rainfall, entrainment of microbiological load, or untreated effluent discharges from wastewater station breakdown or rainwater network contamination.

Risks

Cyanobacteria proliferation potential is moderate with a history of bloom occurrences. Macroalgae and phytoplankton proliferation potential is low with no history of occurrences. Risk of short-term pollution events exists due to tributary discharge and wastewater system vulnerabilities.
